How to maximize your Synchrony savings

Synchrony is the opposite of a "read the fine print" savings account. There are no bonus tiers, no direct deposit tricks, and no conditional rate boosts. That simplicity is the product. Here's how I'd make the most of it.

Step 1: Open and fund — you're already earning the top rate

Unlike most HYSAs that gate their best rate behind a direct deposit or minimum balance, Synchrony pays 3.50% APY on every dollar from day one. No minimum deposit to open, no monthly fees, and no balance cap — whether you have $100 or $100,000, the rate is the same. Interest compounds daily and gets credited monthly, so your money is working from the moment it lands.

Step 2: Automate your deposits

Since Synchrony doesn't offer a checking account, you'll want to link an external bank and set up recurring transfers. The key is making this automatic so your savings balance grows without you having to think about it. Pick a transfer cadence that lines up with your pay schedule — bi-weekly or monthly — and treat it like a bill. Synchrony's app handles linked account transfers easily, or you can set it up from your primary bank's side.

Step 3: Use the ATM card wisely

One of Synchrony's underrated features is the optional ATM card that comes with the savings account. You get access to 400,000+ fee-free ATMs on the Visa Plus and Accel networks, and Synchrony reimburses up to $5 per statement cycle in out-of-network ATM fees. This gives you a pressure valve — you can access cash in a pinch without initiating a multi-day bank transfer. Just be mindful of the $1,000 daily withdrawal limit and don't let easy access erode the balance you're building.

Early Access to Direct Deposit Funds

Early access to direct deposit funds is based on the timing in which we receive notice of impending payment from the Federal Reserve, which is typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, but may vary.

Overdraft Coverage

Overdraft Coverage is a feature automatically offered to SoFi Checking and Savings account holders who receive at least $1,000 or more in Eligible Direct Deposits within a rolling 31 calendar day period on a recurring basis. Eligible Direct Deposit is defined on the SoFi Bank Rate Sheet, available at https://www.sofi.com/legal/banking-rate-sheet. Members enrolled in Overdraft Coverage may be covered for up to $50 in negative balances on SoFi Bank debit card purchases only. Overdraft Coverage does not apply to P2P transfers, bill payments, checks, or other non-debit card transactions. Members with a prior history of unpaid negative balances are not eligible for Overdraft Coverage. Eligibility for Overdraft Coverage is determined by SoFi Bank in its sole discretion.
